What might accelerate the emergence of a global "we"?

For one, as more people can connect, the more people will share ideas. I believe that as more people on the edges begin to tie into the rest of the global knowledge/social/technical economies then we will see the emergence of a new awareness of the true and relative resources available:
Time & People & the environment : the absolute resources
Capital & Information : the relative resources

Humanity posted by John Stanning

Something must happen, not at the technical or political level but in people's hearts. What is it that causes us to cling to our little groups - tribes or nations - fearing and hating others? It seems to be something very basic in our psychology. Babies as young as six months show fear of strangers; schoolchildren form gangs, and are eager to be included and to exclude others, from a very early age. Adults lose no opportunity to make divisions in society: black/white, indigenous/immigrant, Democrat/Republican, East/West, Catholic/Protestant, Hindu/Muslim, American/foreign, etc. Is there any sign that these barriers are becoming weaker, or fewer? I see none.
Before we can achieve a global "we", we must somehow overcome our fear of the global "them".

Pervasive Emergence of Resourceful Manipulators posted by Jacques Sonnierre

Greetings.

In Reply to: James Nyika, with respect.

Forgive my shallow naiveté. The suggestion seems to be that a global ‘we’ will emerge more quickly by more efficient technology which will solve the communication problem by fostering an epiphany of the scarcity of resources and then ….? Reflecting on the explosion of communication technology this last 25 years, and the results this communication tech has garnered, to wit; the brutal widening of the gap of wealth, control of resources by a few, and crushing of the earning abilities of most of the people on the planet, not to mention the pirating of their political and economic sovereignty, and the raping of the earth’s resources, material and human etc, etc. I have little hope in the solution. Tell me, How does a 14 year old factory worker in Asia or a middle aged farmer ‘tie in’ to the global knowledge/social/technical economies? And how would that change their lives? Do you not know those very economies are using their wealth and power to keep them down when they could be doing the opposite? Cause and effect still operates in the world. Seems to me the resources of capital and information are relatively crushing the almost absolutely powerless people and environment in record time to serve the needs of business, i.e. Profit, i.e. Investor greed. And I think, even at their current level of communicative access, they know it. Could you tell me more who the global ‘we’ are in your view? Thank you.

BTW, go here: http://www.workingtv.com/parenti.html to view a very relevant lecture confirming some very important aspects of the truism that ‘Everything is connected’ by a deep thinking, mature, wise, knowledgeable teacher who could see the scenarios on the wall decades ago and how they repeat even today. [The most telling connection noted is between capitalism, global business as currently practiced, and the creation of poverty] It’s a 5-part video titled: "Terrorism, Globalism and Conspiracy".
This is the core of what’s happening. Listen and learn. Question the motives of those around you… or educate me please. I’m always open to higher truth.

Look forward to your comments. Cheers!

On the election of Hamas and confirmation of Justice Alito posted by Manuel Hernandez

I would like to hear the thoughts of those who have read the book in terms of what trends they see emerging as a result of two recent events:
-The victory by Hamas in the Palestinian parliamentary election, and
-The confirmation of Justice Sam Alito.

You make some excellent points. My reflection is that there is nothing in my understanding of global change that will necessarily help you draw a direct 'tie-in' between any particular individual or group of individuals. I think Clinton says it best when he mentions the words ".. on balance" in his references to how the benefits will accrue to different groups affected by global change.

Globalization is like a coin - 3 sided! There is the head (good stuff), tail (undesirable stuff) and the rim (the stuff no one ever notices but is part of the phenomena and does not fall neatly into any of the two categories). You can look at one face all the time or you can keep flipping!-But, the coin's value remains regardless of what you do!
